Heathen Disco Music Reviews #0037 (October 29, 2024)

Castlery: first paid edition, live reviews, new DJ set, plus coverage of techno, shoegaze, power pop and noise rock

Welcome. The door is closed!

Heathen Disco is the name I operate under for music-related programming. The margins of my life are completely sleeved out by music: listening to, enjoying, recommending, promoting, broadcasting, entertaining, releasing music. I am back to writing about it after a bit of a sabbatical, and it’s going pretty well by any yardstick I’d use to measure success in this realm.

To new folks – please check out the previous 36 editions of this newsletter with my compliments. If you don’t discover something new or find anything you like across roughly 180 reviews (most of which were about records released this year), that’s frankly on you. But if you did, you’re welcome to find more for just $3/month or $35/year. This thing publishes twice a week, and I don’t get bored.

If you keep up, let’s compare notes. If you need an escape from all of this going on in the world, music works pretty well for that. If you used to be down and fell off due to life or whatever, here’s how you get back in. Music didn’t stop because you got older, and bands need someone out there who can actually listen to and interpret what they’re doing so that you can know about it and check it out. It is all too easy to sit out whatever’s going on, but we’re at yet another inflection point for independent music and culture that’s worth a shit, and it’s not just the artists and the cottage industries behind them – it’s you, listeners and consumers and appreciators and fans out that decide how this keeps going.

Heathen Disco used to be a radio show but that radio station is firmly in my rear view, as I brought it back home where it belongs. A new episode just dropped over the weekend and you can listen to it here. This is the 384th edition of Heathen Disco.

Working on my comp list for artists and labels and such, just gimme a minute to sort through the rolls and put it together. If you’re regularly sending me music to cover, I got you.

It’s important to see bands, sometimes to close a loop, so here is a field report:
